Being Strong

A Strong Person is Whole within Themself

I was at the doctor’s office the other day and it was full of sick people.

No surprise right?

I have spent time in hospitals and you see a lot of sick people there too.

Also, not surprising.

What I realized one morning sitting in a waiting room, was that no one there was a strong person. They all looked weak, physically weak. In a hospital the only strong patients you see are people who have been injured in a sports accident or some other type of accident. Otherwise, all of the patients are weak.

Now don’t get me wrong, I understand that people who are sick are not to blame for their illness, there are some bad diseases out there that attack the strongest of people. My intention is not to judge.

My point is however, if nearly all of the sick people you see in hospitals and waiting rooms are physically weak, maybe that is an indication that strength would be a good thing.

Be Strong Now and Be Strong For Life

The elderly come to mind in this discussion as well. My father, for instance, was an athlete, a fighter pilot and kept himself strong and in shape all of his life. He is 82 now, and even after a long bout with poly-myalgia rheumatica, an operation to repair an abdominal aortic aneurism and a severe case of bronchitis he is again able to do yard work, plant a garden and get back to life. How? Because he was always first and foremost a strong person physically. Sure he gets tired now and enjoys his rest, but most of his friends are in far worse shape than he is.

If you want to have a good life as a senior citizen,

get strong, stay strong all your life.

To move my point one step further, I was speaking to a mother last night whose 18 year old son is totally lost and may have to leave school. He isn’t a bad kid, he is just lost and doesn’t know what to do with himself or his life. I suggested to her that he simply concentrate on working on making himself stronger, for no other reason than simply to be strong. That in itself is an admirable pursuit.

Strong Teens

Teens are constantly challenged to figure out what they are going to do for a living the rest of their lives. They feel a little disconnected from life because they don’t know. I must say that my school didn’t do a good job in educating people to simply be strong within themselves and that this is the most important information you could possibly get as a teen.

I would tell a teen today, first and foremost, work to become the strongest and best person you can become. Not for the purpose of winning a championship or getting a scholarship. Not to get the lead in a play or to get good grades. Also, not because you are working towards a career and want to get a job to make money. No, first and foremost, simply work on your body to become strong, healthy and flexible so you feel good and have self-confidence.

When I think back on my Physical Education ”class” with the school team coaches as teachers, I begin to get livid. Here is what we did…walked into the gym, they threw out the ball and told us to pick teams and play. They never taught anyone to shoot a basketball, to throw a football or hit a tennis ball. We never did any physical training towards becoming fit. All they ever did was sit courtside and tell jokes while there were kids trying to play ball games and couldn’t catch a balloon if their life depended on it. PE was traumatic for them, and they usually spent the rest of their lives hating sports.

Take care of yourself and yourself will take care of you. Being weak is not an answer to anything. Your quality of life is dependent on how you feel, and if you are strong you feel good and you will be a strong person for life.

Get Strong! It is the way life is supposed to be!
