Hamlet Is Way To Serious For His Own Good

I really love Shakespeare and am thrilled every time I see a play, but as in Hamlet, you often get the feeling that it is all much too serious.  It is a masterpiece and the topic is certainly not fluff, but it really shows how you can drive yourself crazy just thinking too seriously all of the time.

I Always Wanted To Play Hamlet

Singing opera as a tenor makes playing the role of Hamlet impossible.  I don’t think there is a role for a tenor as Hamlet, although it does exist in opera for baritone.  Growing up maybe I never felt like people took me seriously or I never wanted to be superficial so I was always drawn to serious material.  Even my rock and roll was serious.  When I got to college my first role was El Remendado in Carmen, who is a smuggler which is a fun role, but my next role was Faust in Gounod’s adaptation of Goethe’s drama, which is anything but fun or light hearted.

Studying And Performing A Serious Role Like Hamlet Rubs Off On You

Over the course of my career I have sung a lot of roles and due to the nature of my vocal category these roles were primarily serious, even within a comic setting.  Acting roles like a  Hamlet forces you to get into his mind and try to become him, even if in your own way.  So, I’ve done a lot of dramatic roles with personalities which were driven mad by whatever circumstances.  You don’t have to be crazy to be a tenor but it helps!

All of these dark thoughts and serious subjects, like selling your soul to the devil or falling madly in love with a woman who pushes all of your buttons and laughs while your bleeding get inside you somehow.

I realize that my thoughts are way to heavy and even in times of distress things would go much better to take things lightly. Brighten up! Life is too short to not to be light.
