High Notes: The Story of a Career In Opera

Anyone will tell you that the definition of a tenor is by his ”High Notes.”

One rainy afternoon in my teacher’s studio in Den Haag in Holland I started to cry. It was a cry of relief, a cry of triumph a cry of finding truth. I had finally found out ”the secret” of singing great high notes.

I had always had high notes in my voice, could always get a high C, but the upper register had always lacked that sound that people associate with the great tenors, slancio. The big ringing resonate pinging sound that rockets into an auditorium at seemingly light speed is what tenors are always looking for, and if the sound can have ”presence” around it, you become one of the few who can produce it.

See….I gave you the end too early….that is not good story telling.
