Visiting my cousins from Kentucky out in Washington state is always such a joy. They're the kind of people whose presence lifts you up—kind, easy to be around, and full of that steady optimism that leaves you feeling better just for being near them.
This time, we went to Seabrook, Washington—a new development near Pacific Beach… or maybe it was the other way around. Either way, it’s a beautifully designed community modeled after classic New England seaside towns. I'll share some photos soon.
Coming from Kentucky’s heat and humidity, the dry, cool Washington air was literally a breath of fresh air. The Pacific coast was even cooler—like skipping ahead to late October, right in the middle of July. I loved it. It was mostly cloudy and just a touch chilly, which is exactly my kind of weather.
My cousin Jeannie brought everything but the kitchen sink—and actually might've brought that too. She cooked a beautiful dinner and whipped up flapjacks for breakfast. Her brother Will came loaded with lunch supplies, which were both tasty and fun to assemble together. Jeannie’s daughter and her friend lit the firepit for s’mores and gave the hot tub a try. Soap joined us as well, and we worked on a dialogue for her acting workshop, alongside the usual engaging banter we always fall into.
The dogs—Griswald, a shepherd/husky mix, and Florence, who’s mostly dachshund-shaped with a mystery lineage—kept us thoroughly entertained and were always up for a bit of fun.
I’d love to spend more time out on the Pacific Coast in the summer. It’s such a refreshing change from the southern heat—and time with my transplanted cousins is always time well spent.
I’m incredibly grateful for all of them and lucky to have them in my life.
