Writing is Still Important

Reading and Writing are still King and Queen!

In our world of modern technology, videos, television, radio, recordings, mp3 downloads, pod-casts and internet presentations it is easy to think that writing has lost all of it’s value, both for the writer and also for the audience.

But in fact, writing is still the best way to communicate information and if we aren’t careful reading will fast become a lost skill.

First of all, writing gives you the ability to organize your words in such a way to best describe your thoughts and feelings.

The word processor on computers has become an extremely valuable tool for this very reason. But, even there are problems with writing with a computer that one may not realize, and really is more important for the author than it is for the reader.

Writing with pen and paper is still the best way to write. Why?  Because it is a cathartic practice. It takes time, it requires you to control your hand and this minute skill of handwriting is very important for the artistic and creative development of a human being.

People who don’t read or write lack a patience that readers and writers possess.

In addition, when you look at Da Vinci’s journals, you see a perfect combination of thoughts as text and images, completed or incomplete recorded in a stream of consciousness. Later you can take that information and play with it by moving the information around.

Another thing is that writing gives you the ability to concisely list a series of facts based on a certain sorting element. Date, time, place, persons or a list of instructions.

So, when you have it written down, you can simply gaze down the page and get the information you are looking for, especially important if you have a question about something in reference to something mentioned later. It is much easier to do this, than to go back and find a section of a recording, because it isn’t cataloged usually in any way.  You are seeing more time stamping today of video and audio content, but mostly it isn’t done. Still, any type of stamping requires a written list to access it.

But, when telling a story or transferring emotions and meaning, long handed writing is still the best method.

I can type almost as fast as I can talk. The product of this is the ability to pour out tons of words, pages and thoughts. But, writing slows me down and makes me spend time with the person I am writing to. Plus, my creative writing is much better by hand.

So, while videos and audios are great in many ways, reading and writing are still king.

This is why blogs are great…

1.  You can use audio and video in your blog.

2.  You can write to highlight the audio or video.

3. A blog IS a website that is alive and automatically archives your work in date and subject for easy reference.

4. A static website is dead and difficult to update. A Blog is a website that is made to update.

5. So, if you don’t have a blog, you are missing out on the best way to communicate there is.
