Winning and becoming a champion … Step 4 – Humility

Winning and becoming a champion –

Step 4 is humility…

What does that mean?  How can being humble make you a champion?

Being humble means putting the ego on the back burner so that your mind and spirit are open to new information. If you think you already know it all and defend your limited understanding with a sensitve ego you may reject important information simply out of foolish pride.

Winners and champions are coachable.

They presume that they know little about what they are trying to do.

It is easier and a lot more enjoyable to work with people who aren’t know it alls. Working in opera and being in rehearsals there are so many different  types of people and the most ineffective rehearsals are inevitably the ones where someone is out to show the world their vast insight into the subject matter at hand. It can be anyone in the room. Directors, especially, conductors, singers, musicians it goes on and on. Questioning and discussing things until all of the energy is out of the room and the only thing on people’s mind is when are these folks going to shut up and get stuff done, or lets have a break.

Winners and champions are always looking for an extra piece of information, they don’t waste their time pumping their ego by talking about all they know. They don’t have time for it.

Winning with a humble heart leaves the door open for future success because you realize that with the little skill and knowledge you have acquired, something great was handed to you. You know that there is so much left to do that you almost feel like an imposter.

It also takes the sting out of losing, because your ego isn’t damaged by it. It is just another lesson to be learned, not a crushing blow to your psychy. Ego filled people have difficulty losing because it throws off their equilibrium. They thought they knew it all and are the worlds best and that gets destroyed when you lose.  Then their their biggest challenge is to reboost their ego.

This is the best thing about losing, it shows you that the ego is fragile but a humble heart is strong. Fascinating stuff!
