One of the greatest things about being active in the arts is that it is something you can be productive with your entire life. Aside from waning physical youth and dexterity, artistic skills are like fine wines that get better with age. That is something I thought was really great about the arts.
The arts takes who you are and can deepen your life experience in ways that other areas cannot hope to reach. While many other pursuits may also have a progressive and compounding effect, the arts are special because it is all about the human condition.
I love to write but it was not ever in my head to be a writer. I am a highly skilled musician who lost the ability to use his instrument for some reason. Being a performing musician is such an incredible experience that anything else pales in the face of it. Performing opera has got to be one of the highest forms of experience available to anyone.
I have learned that I am not a great audience member. I don’t do well as a spectator. Maybe it is because I know too much, I care too much or I am restless sitting in that chair. I don’t know. All I know that the only place I have ever really truly felt at home was on stage.
What have I learned from this?
I have listened to a lot of music and studied a lot of music but it was always because I was preparing for a performance. I know the music I know, because I performed it. To me, music IS performance.
What does this mean?
It means that without a planned performance, I have great difficulty doing anything, studying, learning, listening or working. Performing is my reason to be. Performance is an art, where the essence of communication is subliminal, the connection you make with people on a subconscious level, in fact, it is deeper than that, the connection is spiritual and emotional.
We know that we can send messages, words, music, video through the air invisibly, because they ride on frequency waves. The arts are like that. What we produce is in the form of words, music, visuals, but the real connection is the frequency in which it is sent and the thing that really resonates with people is when the transmitter and the receiver are tuned in to the same frequency.
People operate at different frequencies and we can’t hope to reach everyone because not everyone is going to be on our frequency. For me, it is about having a stage to perform on, a transmission point from which to send my message, and to be able to express myself to those who are on my frequency too.
This doesn’t mean that others don’t matter to me, they do very much, and I hope that I can hear them and they can hear me, but those of a kindred spirit are special, because this is the community which resonates my performance and I can resonate theirs.
