The Home Garden
I was never a gardener myself. But, my father has always grown one and my mom’s father and grand-father were both avid gardeners. My father grew up on the farm so he has the land in his blood and enjoys the work involved in growing a garden, not to mention eating from it as well! My mom loves fresh garden veggies but is usually the one saddled with the task of putting it all up and cleaning the dirt tracked in from my dad’s shoes!
A friend of mine once told me that some philosopher he read about wrote that man’s highest satistisfaction comes from planting seeds, nurturing to grow, harvesting the crop and eating the fruits of his labor. I have many friends who have gardens, one landlord I had planted his yard with many different flowering plants so that he had something blooming all year round. It was so beautiful to wake up in the morning look outside at the front lawn covered with snow and seeing the little purple flowers pushing through the snow. In the spring as the warmth of the sun filled the backyard his garden would burst with colors like fireworks on the 4th of July in Washington DC.
Here in Germany they have these garden communities where people who live in apartments can have their gardens, with there tool sheds and what not to grow food and sit around and barbecue. It is rather nice!
I don’t know if I will ever become a gardener, but I would like to and have a great respect for anyone who makes a garden grow!
