Storytelling Is A Challenge For Me

The Skill Of Storytelling Is A Gift

I remember going to my aunt’s and uncle’s house when I was a kid. To me they seemed so old and they would tell these seemingly never ending stories about the great old days that were so hard. Their childhoods and youths included World War I, The Great Depression and World War II so actually yes, they lived during a time of great upheaval. But all of this storytelling just bored me to tears.  A foolish kid has no connection to their lives, it means nothing to a kid what they went through, so listening to un-ending stories digressing into tangent stories just wailed on my nerves.

“Storytelling is fine as long as you can encourage people to act on the stories.´´          Karen Armstrong

Getting Friendly With Storytelling

Over the years my conditioning against listening to stories has been re-enforced by my Mom who also loves to digress and my brother who is the king of digression!  I guess my distaste for storytelling has something to do with my personality, so I take the blame for it. But, man, people………… EDIT!!!

I have noticed that whenever I attempt storytelling I am rushing and trying to keep it as short as possible, simply wanting to tell the facts and am not so interested in it as an art form. None the less, I get peeved when something interrupts me when I am telling a story. So either this means I’m a lousy storyteller and don’t hold people’s attention or they are just rude. I think it is time for me to get friendly with storytelling so my stories get told.

Storytelling That Interests Others

So in order for storytelling to be interesting it must involve the listeners somehow.  If they don’t care about what you are talking about then they won’t listen to your story about it. I guess.  I am a little confused on it.  People tell stories about other people who had a certain experience or a story about the people listening.  All I know is that I need to get good at it because they say it is necessary for business.

If you have any insights for me I would be welcome to hear them. Please leave a note below with any suggestions for me.  Blogging is fun and I am going to use it to write stories about things and possibly I will get good at it and eventually make money with it.
