Where are you going?

If you don’t know where you are going you’ll probably end up nowhere.

No matter the way you are traveling, nothing makes any sense unless you are going anywhere. I used to love sailing, for the sake of sailing, so we would sail around in circles all day, just to see how fast we could get the boat to go.  On occasion we would participate in a regatta to see if we could win anything, which we didn’t because our boat was slow and we were probably not very good at it. But the greatest enjoyment in sailing was to actually go somewhere, even if it was just to dock at the pier and go in to buy a coke.

The enjoyment of every form of transportation is about going somewhere. Sure it is nice to enjoy a Sunday drive just to see where the roads go, but it is much better to have a goal.

So no matter what it is, walking, running, driving, flying or sailing having a destination is much more enjoyable than just going around in circles. I’ll admit, I have spent a lot of time going circles, physically and figuratively. My singing career had destinations, so I was able to get somewhere with it.

But, if you don’t have a destination, just going ambiguously through life is actually torture.

I went to an island for vacation once, and we had to take a ferry to get to the island, which was a lot of fun. But being on an island you couldn’t get off of, was torture to me. Of course we went to different destinations on the island, but I had the feeling I was trapped there.

If there is one truth in life, just living isn’t enough, it really isn’t. To fully enjoy life you must be going somewhere, even if it is to find nirvana and be a Buddhist Monk or whatever. A life without a mission is pointless.

My father was a jet fighter pilot in the Air Force back in the 50s, and so he had a lifetime license to fly. So, every now and then we would take up a little Cessna and go for a fly. But, we wanted to fly somewhere, so we decided to fly to his boyhood home, where the airport is literally in his back yard. (It was an old World War II construction with 3 huge runways and the only traffic on it was crop dusters. But, that trip was so much fun. We navigated our way across Kentucky and flew over so many well known areas. it was such a fulfilling experience to go somewhere with the plane, and not just fly around in circles, just to fly. That is a waste of time.

A life lived on purpose is a life defined. Learning how to determine your destination can be done right here, right now with this blogging system and with the Empower Network. Decide and go!
