The Truth About Friends, Family And Business

Knowing The Truth About Friends, Family And Business

I have always wanted to be in a business and one thing about network marketing that was attractive for me was the idea of being in business with the people I know.  But, I have learned a valuable lesson, the truth about friends, family and business.  It seemed to make perfect sense to me to bring a couple of friends or family members into a business that has products that people can use in their lives.  It seemed logical to me that those couple of people would be interested in simply doing the same thing and on and on it would go until you had built a team of business partners you know, trust and like and everyone is making money and happy.

Boy, was that ever a pipe dream.  The truth about friends, family and business is that it is a very bad idea.  Why?  The only real requirement of being in business is to have an entrepreneurial mindset.  There is nothing in the entrepreneurial mindset that indicates any friend or family member would possess that quality, so in essence it is a waste of time to talk to people who don’t have that mindset, because the language you are speaking is not one they understand.

Here is the reason why it is a waste of time.  You can tell from their language and since you know them well and know their language, you know whether or not they have the mindset.  The truth about friends, family and business is that they are content with the way their lives are and aren’t curious about anything else.  They simply don’t want to be bothered with it, so why on earth would you?  These are people you love and it isn’t your job to help them nor is it appreciated.

The truth about friends, family and business is disappointing

So many businesses out there in network marketing preach making a list of everyone you know and then contacting them and telling them about the products and the opportunity. Well, I have done this and have gotten nothing but nowhere.  Even those who are relatively non-judgmental about it aren’t at all interested and have absolutely zero curiosity about the idea.  It confounds me, because I will look at anything and everything.

Here is why it is disappointing…you hear people talking constantly about how the rent is expensive or vacation is expensive and that people want to move to a different house or apartment and that their employer doesn’t pay them enough and the list goes on and on. So, you listen to that and think of telling them ”I have a way that you can make extra money.”  Actually, I have done this, thinking wrongly that they would actually like to make more money.  Boy, does that ever get you disappointed, because not only are they not interested in making more money, you often get a list of things that is wrong with your suggestion and why it won’t work.  The dream of helping people out is shattered and the excitement of building a group of people that help other people solve their money worries gets dashed on the rocks of false hopes.

Then comes the litany of accusations of pyramids, ponzis and chain letters from people who don’t even know what one is and talk like they know everything there is to know on the subject, when in fact, they are totally clueless.  Furthermore, these people supposedly know me, trust me and like me but in that same breath they are accusing me of doing something illegal or immoral, when exactly the opposite is true.

So the result is, it makes you angry.  It makes them angry.  It makes everyone angry.  So why on earth would you ever risk your relationship with friends and family just because you would like to do something positive with them?   Here is my answer…DON’T DO IT! It is not worth it.

Another comment you get is, ”okay, come back when you are doing well and I’ll think about it.”  Here is what that is…it is someone who wants to hang on someone else’s coattails.  Really?  Is that the type of person you want on your team.  NO! Of course not.

The truth about friends, family and business is that they don’t mix.  Just cross it off of the list and you will be much happier.  The friendships you make by building your business with people who are actually interested in it will be the ones that bring you success, not trying to pull along those who will argue with you every step of the way.

As Jim Rohn once said you have to walk away from the 97% and in many cases friends and family are in that 97%.  It is painful to feel like you have to walk away from them and adopt new and healthier attitudes.  That is not easy at all.  You have to find a way to be who you want to be and be strong in that without trying to convert those you know to your new found religion of the 3% because it is for darn sure that the 97% will not understand you and you have to understand that.

Those with understanding, must be understanding for the others who aren’t.

Be courageous and attract the people who are interested in doing what you want to do and that will most likely not be among your friends and family. Accept it, become friends with it and just keep on living for your dreams. It is your life.  Live your life.
