"Being creative is enough."

I Don't Know What To Say

May 31, 2013

Sometimes it is difficult to come up with something to say. This happens in many situations and one of the best ways to express ourselves is to do it non-verbally by using the arts to express yourself without having to detail it to death with dialogue.

Expression is so important in our daily life.  In fact we express ourselves non-verbally all day long by moving in a certain way or dressing a certain way.  But one way people can express themselves is through music, and playing an instrument is perfect for that because you can just play anyway you want to express what you want. Dancing also frees up the soul to express strong emotions and offers a safe haven for this expression. I never feel so good as when I dance. I absolutely love it.

I have to say that watching life performances of non-verbal mediums such as symphonies, ballet, a lot of jazz music and chamber music brings me such a sense of fulfillment.  I know many folks have a hard time sitting through some long piano sonata or a symphony, but that is not the music’s fault but rather people’s inability to listen, really listen and follow the music.  Ballet and dance performances in general are fabulous to me because of the great expressiveness that is unlocked from the dancers. You mind sometimes wanders to far off places while watching and listening, but that isn’t such a bad thing, it gives space for the mind to be free and not pounded with the labor of interpreting words.

Recently I was given some insight into how to look at abstract paintings.  It takes some time and it was interesting to describe what I saw and what the artist had to say about it.  Here again, the person looking at the painting is delivered a series of associations and it causes your mind to connect different dots.

There has been a lot of discussion on the fact that our senses provide huge amounts of information to our conscious and more importantly our sub-conscious minds.  The emotions and thoughts combing the stimulus of sensual perceptions due to non-verbal art forms can be a great way to reflect on your life and your feelings.  Art is an expression, but it isn’t only one way, it is a dialogue between yourself, your senses and the work of art.

So, if you are at a loss for words or don’t know what to say, simply say nothing, play an instrument, dance and move or express yourself through a drawing or painting.  We live in a world of many words, as you see here, so escape that world and experience to world of meaning that has no border, the world between your imagination and art.
